As of early 2012, 29% of people older than 18 in the United States owned some type of digital reading device, such as a tablet computer or e-reader. In fact, the ownership of digital reading devices in the US rose by more than 60% during the December 2011-to-January 2012 holiday season. Analysts noted that the sudden uptick in ownership might be related to the decision by some manufacturers to release low-priced models during the holiday season.

More about digital reading devices:

  • More than one-third of college graduates in the US owned a tablet or e-reader as of 2012.

  • As of early 2012, 21% of Americans had read a book on digital reading device.

  • Digital reading devices are often capable of sending user data to retailers. This data might include information such as how often a reader uses the e-reading device or how far the reader gets in a particular book.
