What is Trikatu?

Trikatu is a dietary supplement containing ginger rhizomes, Indian long pepper, and black pepper. The name is a Sanskrit term, which can be translated as “three spices” or “three pungents.” It is an ancient Ayurvedic treatment that is typically taken on a regular basis to aid in digestion.

Ginger, one of the main ingredients in trikatu, is widely recognized as a beneficial treatment for nausea and other stomach problems. Long pepper aids in the overall digestion process, while black pepper acts to increase the body’s digestive enzymes. Together, this trio of natural ingredients is a powerful supplement for a variety of ailments.

This supplement is often used to assist in weight loss. Trikatu acts as an appetite suppressant while simultaneously increasing metabolism. It stimulates the production of many digestive enzymes, thereby decreasing gas, nausea, constipation, excessive belching, bloating, and indigestion. By helping individuals to achieve and maintain an ideal weight, this treatment also helps to decrease blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

In Ayurvedic terms, this treatment increases the element of fire, or agni, while decreasing water and earth, or kapha. This warming action stimulates many bodily functions. While digestive function is often the focus of this treatment, it is also believed to aid in respiratory and reproductive functions.

Individuals with cold or flu symptoms such as congestion and coughing may find relief with a few doses of trikatu. It is believed to act as a natural antihistamine. Its warming properties are also said to increase circulation and overall respiratory function.

Some believe trikatu to be an aphrodisiac. It may increase blood flow to the reproductive organs, creating the same warming effect that it has on the lungs and digestive organs. This is one of its lesser known properties, however, and may act more as a beneficial side effect than a main purpose for taking the supplement.

This supplement can be taken once or twice a day with meals. It is available in both powder and caplet form. The powder can be mixed with honey to create a palatable paste. It may take several weeks of daily doses for the treatment to take full effect.

Individuals with serious digestive problems should not rely on trikatu as a solution. The increase in digestive enzymes may exacerbate some problems rather than treat them. Acid reflux, liver disease, and some infections will only be worsened by this supplement. A health care professional should be consulted before use.
